This Stupidly Tough Flip Phone Meets Military Standards

With exploding cellphones taking headlines on a regular basis now, you may be yearning for a phone that's tough. If so, look no further than the borderline absurd Torque X01 built by the Japanese company Kyocera.

This Stupidly Tough Flip Phone Meets Military Standards

The Torque is a flip phone with only a few apps oriented towards hiking and other outdoor activities, with data on weather, temperature, altitude and barometric pressure. You'll have to flip open the flip phone to interact with it, but relevant information can also be mirrored to the front screen so you read it while the phone is closed. What cutting edge tech!
The main selling feature, though, is the toughness. According to Kyocera, the phone passed the U.S Department of Defense's 18 categories of Military Standard 810G durability testing. That means it held up blowing rain of 1.7mm/min for half an hour in six directions, immersion in water for 30 minutes at a depth of five feet, sand and dust for six consecutive hours, a freeze-thaw in which a fog was created at -10°C, rapidly changing temperature between -21 and 50°C for three consecutive hours, and various other feats of strength. It's worth noting, however, that this stress-testing was done in-house by Kyocera, not by the DoD.

Kyocera's not the only player in the toughphone game. Catepillar, best known for its heavy duty machinery, also sells CATphones, which have met several of the same military standards and also has thermal imaging software built-in.
